This edition also contains both parts of "Snail on the Slope" originally published in two parts - the first half ("Forest") celebrated, and the second ("Directorate") banned - it appears here in its whole form. The present collection's main exception was "The Ugly Swans," which had no early publication due to censors and did not appear in any published form until the 80s even here in samizdat form, it was produced with gaps and a blank page. ![]() ![]() Solaris, perhaps the best-known Tarkovsky. These are samizdat copies of works which originally appeared in 1960s-70s magazines, were banned, and then published in the late 1980s. The Strugatskys 1972 novel Roadside Picnic became the source material for Tarkovskys mesmerizing 1979 film Stalker. ![]() Literally "self-publishing," samizdat was the dissident preservation, publication, and circulation of banned or censored materials. ![]() Volume One: "Hard to Be a God" and "Far Rainbow." Volume Two: "Roadside Picnic," "Snail on the Slope," "The Ugly Swans," "Tale of the Troika," and "Definitely Maybe" (the title of which literally translates to "A Billion Years to the End of the World"). Seven typewritten works by brothers/co-authors Arkady (1925-1991) and Boris (1933-2012) Strugatsky, in two contemporary full-cloth bindings. ![]()
